Panel Cleaning

Solar panel cleaning in San Diego. Production restored.

Dust, marine layer film, and bird droppings can drop solar output 15 to 30 percent. We use a soft brush and purified deionized water — no detergents, no high pressure, no spotting. Most San Diego homes need cleaning twice a year. Commercial arrays usually need quarterly service.

What do homeowners ask about Panel Cleaning?

How often should solar panels be cleaned in San Diego?

Twice a year for most homes. Coastal homes with heavy marine layer or homes near agriculture, dirt roads, or trees with heavy bird traffic should plan on quarterly. Inland homes with low pollen and no nearby trees can sometimes go 12 months between cleanings if rainfall is normal.

Why not just hose them off?

Tap water in San Diego is hard. It dries to a mineral film that bonds to the glass and actually blocks more light over time. We use deionized water that leaves zero residue. We also use a soft brush — high pressure can void your panel warranty and damage the anti-reflective coating.

How much production will I get back?

Depends on how dirty they were. We've seen 8 to 12 percent recovery on lightly soiled coastal homes and 25 to 35 percent on neglected commercial arrays. We pull the production data before and after so you can verify it.

Do you clean panels in the rain or fog?

Light fog is fine and the panels are at safer temperature. Active rain we usually reschedule because the inspection portion is harder. We don't clean panels above 110°F glass temperature — thermal shock can crack cells.

Will cleaning void my panel warranty?

Not when done properly. Most manufacturers — LG, Panasonic, REC, SunPower, Q Cells, Trina, Jinko — require periodic cleaning and forbid only abrasive pads, harsh detergents, and high-pressure water. We use methods that comply with all major manufacturer specs.

Homeowners who hired us for this

We hadn't cleaned our panels in two years. They came out the same week, did the soft-wash deionized rinse, and showed me the production jump in our Enphase app the next day. About 11% more daily kWh. Clear price up front, no upsell.

Melissa R. Solar Panel Cleaning · Carlsbad

Got three quotes for a recurring maintenance plan. Solar Pros was the only one that actually explained the soiling math under NEM 3.0 and showed me data, not a sales pitch. Their plan price was fair and they pull production reports for me each visit.

David K. Maintenance Plan · El Cajon

Pigeons had nested under our panels for almost a year — droppings everywhere and our production was tanking. They installed the critter-guard mesh and did a deep clean in one visit. Cleaner roof, no more bird noise, production back to normal within a week.
